BOOK DESCRIPTION

THE WEARY BLUES by Langston Hughes, with an Introduction by Carl Van Vechten. The book is flatsigned by Langston Hughes with a presentation note to Josephine Johnson, the Pulitzer Prize-winning novelist. The book is a First Edition, 7th Printing, published by Alfred A. Knopf in January, 1935 following Knopf's first printing of 1926. This copy is signed by Langston Hughes and was presented to Josephine Johnson in April, 1938. The recipient, Josephine Winslow Johnson (1910-1990), was a noted American novelist, poet and essayist. In 1935 she won the Pulitzer Prize for Fiction at age twenty-four for her first novel, NOW IN NOVEMBER.  Langston Hughes' handwritten presentation note to Ms. Johnson on the front blank endpaper reads "For Josephine Johnson, with sincere greetings --- Langston Hughes -- St. Louis, April 9, 1938." Vail-Ballou Inc. of Binghamton, New York printed THE WEARY BLUES. Sans dust jacket, this book of classic American poetry measures 5.25" x 7.75" and contains 109 pages.

CONDITION

THE WEARY BLUES interior is in Fine condition, with the outer edges of a few pages showing minor irregularities but without rips or tears. There is very slight foxing (speckles) on only two pages: the rear blank page and rear end page, with no text affected. The cover and spine are Fine/Very Fine. The Seller states that the interior of the book has no further defects or writing other than the Hughes' presentation note and a light pencil line (erasable) on small portion of the dedication page. The book has no loose pages, rips, tears, dampstains, or creases throughout.

PROVENANCE

THE WEARY BLUES was an inheritance to the Seller, whose mother was
Josephine Johnson. When Langston Hughes was on tour in St. Louis, Missouri
in 1938, he presented Ms. Johnson with this copy after inscribing it to her.
