SIR WILLIAM OSLER (July 12, 1849 – December 29, 1919) was a
Canadian physician. He was one of the "Big Four" founding
professors at Johns Hopkins Hospital as the first Professor of
Medicine and founder of the Medical Service there. Osler,
author of THE PRINCIPLES AND PRACTICE OF MEDICINE, created
the first residency program for specialty training of physicians
and was the first to bring medical students out of the
lecture hall for bedside clinical training. He has been called the
"Father of modern medicine."

BOOK DESCRIPTION

THE PRINCIPLES AND PRACTICE OF MEDICINE by Sir William Osler. New York: D. Appleton and Company, 1892. This is a First State, First Printing with the 2 noted errata: "Georgias" for the correct Gorgias on the Plato quotation facing the Contents page; and "November, 1891" rather than 1892 at top of second set of advertisements (as seen in photos above). Original hardcover in 1/4 deep green leather binding.The book measures 7.00" x 10.00" and contains 1,079 pages. This important book was designed for the use of practitioners and students of medicine. William Osler, the leading internist of his day, was a fellow of the Royal College of Physicians, London; a. Professor of Medicine at the Johns Hopkins University and Physician-In-Chief to the Johns Hopkins Hospital, Baltimore. He had formerly been Professor of the Institutes of Medicine at McGill University, Montreal; and Professor of Clinical Medicine at the University of Pennsylvania in Philadelphia. This book has been described by experts as "The best English work on medicine of its time, and probably the most influential general textbook of medicine ever published. For example, the Chinese language edition was the first complete Western textbook of medicine available in Chinese. "The outstanding chapters were those on the communicable diseases (in particular typhois and malarial infections, cholera Asiatica, the pneumonias, syphilis, and tuberculosis) and the diseases of the circulatory system in which Osler’s unique knowledge of the pathology of cardiac affections and aneurysms was utilized in a most effective way." CONDITION

THE PRINCIPLES AND PRACTICE OF MEDICINE hardbound cover and interior are in Good+/Fine- condition. The interior text and figure pages are clean, tight and bright. The leather cover and spine indicate occasional minor bumps and scuffing, with no tears, rips or looseness to the binding. On the front end page there are a very few small holes, as if the paper had worn away in these spots only. On the opening page facing the inside front cover only are small discolorations which are approximately 1/2" long. According to the Seller, there are no bumps, bends, chips, speckles, marks, writing, rips, tears or damp staining to the book other than those described.
